The Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, and Formentera are situated off the coast of Spain. The local language is Spanish, although English is widely spoken. The development of tourism on the islands began in the 70s when package holidays grew in popularity, but most people holidaying in the area these days prefer a cheap flight and to rent a self catering villa or apartment. There is a huge choice available.
Mallorca is the largest island. It used to be called Majorca but the Spanish authorities changed the island's name in an attempt to rid the island of its reputation for noisy nightlife. In recent years some of the old-style hotels have been knocked down and replaced by apartment blocks in an attempt to rebrand the island. The rest of the island is much quieter and very picturesque, particularly the Tramuntana hills.
Tourism is less developed on the second largest island, Menorca, which is popular with families and older holidaymakers. The Balearic Islands are famous for their beaches, the best of which are found on the island of Menorca. Holidaymakers seeking self catering accommodation rentals are well catered for on Menorca.
Ibiza, the third largest of the Balearic Islands, has long been famous for its nightlife which acts like a magnet to youngsters. The town of Ibiza is charming and lively, as is the resort of Playa d'en Bossa. Away for the capital, however, the countryside is remarkably rural. Ibiza, too, is well-endowed with apartment blocks and villas, and the holidaymaker seeking self-catering apartments or villas has a wide choice.
A short distance from Ibiza lies the only other inhabited island of Formentera. A narrow channel separates the two islands and ferries run between the two taking holidaymakers on day-trips. A mere 12 miles in length, Formentera has stunning beaches, many of which are deserted even in summer. Development on the island has been restrained by the planning authorities, resulting in few hotels, unspoilt countryside, peace and tranquillity.
